Importance of Safety Training for High School Students

By Abbie Geigle

Recent reports of rising child labor violations have led lawmakers to call for a Department of Labor investigation, highlighting the urgent need for comprehensive safety training for high school students entering the workforce.

In January 2024, a tragic incident underscored this need. A 16-year-old worker, participating in a work-based learning program, was using a walk-behind trencher on a job site in Washington when he was dragged underneath the blade, resulting in the amputation of both legs.

Preventing Injuries

Young workers are at a higher risk of workplace injuries due to their limited knowledge of potential hazards. Training equips them with the necessary skills to recognize and avoid dangerous situations, reducing the likelihood of accidents.

Building a Safety Culture

Introducing safety training at an early age instills the importance of workplace safety. This foundation encourages young workers to prioritize safety throughout their careers, fostering a culture of prevention and caution in the workforce.

Legal Compliance

Employers have a legal obligation to ensure the safety of all employees, including minors. Proper training helps businesses comply with labor laws and regulations, promoting a safe working environment for young workers.

Enhancing Confidence and Competence

Training provides young workers with the confidence and competence to perform tasks safely and efficiently. This enhances job performance and reduces the stress and anxiety associated with new work environments.
